Phat Diem Cathedral

Phat Diem Cathedral is 120km south of Hanoi, located in Luu Phuong Commune, Kim Son District, Ninh Binh Province. This is a place for worshipping Jesus, Mary, St. John, the Apostles (St. Peter) and the Martyrs.

Phat Diem Cathedral is the name of a complex including many architects: Phuong Dinh, the Grand Cathedral and four adjacent churches, stone church, St. Peter  church, St. Joseph, St. Roch, Belem Cave, Lo Duc cave, So Mountain, etc,started to be built in1875, completed in 1898. The construction were built of bricks, wood and stone, of which stone material accounts for a large proportion. Unlike other churches with towering architectural styles, Phat Diem Cathedral was architectural in the styles of communal houses, pagodas and temples. Each building is a work of architectural art with its own national and modern characteristics. The great architect of this project was father Pedro Tran Luc.
Today, the relic is a place for religious activities of the people in region and tourists from other places. This is not only a unique architectural work but also attractive destination for visitors. With these values, Phat Diem Cathedral was recognized as National Historical and Cultural Relics by the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) in 1987.
